Frequently Asked Questions
General
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No referral is required. You can contact Rainbow Speech Language Clinic directly to schedule an assessment or therapy session for yourself or your child.
Do you offer teletherapy sessions?
Yes. We offer full teletherapy services via a secure, PIPEDA-compliant video platform. Teletherapy is available for clients across British Columbia and is just as effective as in-person care for most goals.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
Common signs include difficulty being understood by others, limited vocabulary for their age, stuttering, frustration when communicating, or difficulty following directions. If you have concerns, we recommend booking an initial consultation — early support often leads to the best outcomes.
What ages do you work with?
We work with clients across the lifespan — from toddlers as young as 12 months through to adults. Our services are tailored to each individual's age, needs, and goals.
Assessments
What does a speech or language assessment involve?
An assessment gives a detailed picture of your child's communication skills. It typically includes a parent or caregiver interview, standardised tests, and play-based observation. The SLP then summarises the findings and recommends next steps.
How long does an assessment take?
Assessment length varies depending on the child's age and the areas being assessed. Most assessments take between 1.5 and 3 hours. Your clinician will advise you on the expected duration when booking.
Will I receive a written report after the assessment?
Yes. A written report is included with formal assessments. It summarises findings, explains the results in plain language, and provides recommendations. If you need a report for school, insurance, or a specialist, our report meets all standard requirements.
Can the assessment be used for an autism or funding application?
Yes. Our formal assessment reports can be used as part of a multidisciplinary assessment for conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and may support applications for government funding programs such as At Home Program or Autism Funding.
Therapy
How often will my child need therapy sessions?
Session frequency depends on your child's goals, severity of difficulties, and family schedule. Most clients attend weekly or bi-weekly sessions. Your SLP will recommend a schedule after the initial assessment and review it regularly as your child progresses.
How long does therapy take to show results?
Progress varies widely depending on the nature and severity of the difficulty, consistency of attendance, and home practice. Many families notice meaningful changes within the first few months. Your SLP will set measurable goals and track progress at regular intervals.
Do parents need to attend sessions?
We strongly encourage parent involvement. For younger children especially, parents and caregivers are essential partners in therapy. We dedicate time each session to sharing strategies you can use at home to extend learning into everyday routines.
What areas does therapy cover?
We provide therapy for a wide range of communication needs including speech sound development, language delays and disorders, stuttering and fluency, voice, social communication, literacy, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
Fees & Funding
Is speech therapy covered by MSP (BC Medical)?
MSP does not cover private speech-language pathology services. However, many extended health benefit plans do provide coverage. We recommend checking your plan details before your first appointment.
What funding programs might help cover costs?
Eligible families may access funding through the BC Autism Funding Program, the At Home Program, CYSN (Children and Youth with Special Needs), or RCBC (Rehabilitation Centre for Children). We can provide documentation to support funding applications.
Do you offer direct billing?
We provide detailed receipts and reports that you can submit to your extended health provider for reimbursement. Please contact us to ask about direct billing options for your specific insurer.
