Frequently Asked Questions
General
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No referral is required. You can contact Rainbow Speech Language Clinic directly to schedule an assessment or therapy session for yourself or your child.
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language, or communication development, it is always a good idea to seek a professional opinion. Signs to look out for include difficulty being understood by others, limited vocabulary, trouble following directions, or frustration when trying to communicate. Contact us for guidance — we are happy to help you determine the right next step.
Do you offer services in languages other than English?
Please contact us to discuss your language needs. We will do our best to match you with a therapist who can support you.
Can I attend sessions with my child?
Yes — parent and caregiver involvement is a core part of our approach. We encourage caregivers to attend sessions and provide you with strategies to use at home between appointments.
Assessments
What happens during a speech and language assessment?
A speech and language assessment typically involves standardised testing, observation, and an interview with parents or caregivers. We look at your child’s speech sounds, vocabulary, grammar, understanding, and social communication. A detailed written report with findings and recommendations is provided following the assessment.
How long does an assessment take?
Most assessments take between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your child’s age and the areas being evaluated. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to review the results and discuss recommendations.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. A comprehensive written report is provided following every assessment. This report can be shared with your child’s school, paediatrician, or funding organisation as needed.
Therapy
How often will my child need therapy?
The frequency of therapy depends on your child’s individual needs and goals. Most children attend sessions once or twice per week. Your therapist will make a recommendation following the initial assessment.
How long will therapy take?
The duration of therapy varies widely depending on the nature and severity of the communication difficulty, the child’s rate of progress, and how consistently home practice strategies are applied. Your therapist will monitor progress regularly and update goals and timelines accordingly.
Do you offer teletherapy?
Yes. We offer teletherapy sessions via a secure video platform. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person therapy for many children, and offer the added benefit of convenience and flexibility.
Fees & Funding
Are your services covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans cover speech-language pathology services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your coverage. We can provide receipts and documentation to support your claim.
What government funding is available?
Depending on your child’s diagnosis and age, funding may be available through programs such as the BC Autism Funding Program, the At Home Program, or CYSN (Children and Youth with Special Needs). Visit our Helpful Links page for more information on available funding sources.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to a fee.
